As had been planned, the party set up a honeypot for the wurmspawn by having Amadi pretend to be drunk after nightfall and hang out under a streetlamp, while Kraldar and Ilyon hid in the shadows between two buildings and Scruffin flew about overhead. But Ilyon, upset that his mother Venelle Averin was nowhere to be found, drank too much and passed out. Before too long, a man appeared out of the darkness, limping and asking Amadi for help. As Amadi walked over to him, Kraldar was ambushed by two wurmspawn. Kraldar called out, and Amadi and Scruffin quickly dispatched the wurmspawn. The man took off at a run, but Scruffin used a resilient sphere to imprison him. Upon closer inspection, it was revealed that he was Todrik, one of Boss Durgha‘s goons. The party tried to interrogate him, but he was quite resilient, not believing that Kraldar would let him leave, and the interrogation devolved into a fight. But Amadi disarmed and knocked Todrik out, and the party carried him to the garrison’s jail. Once there, Kraldar revived him, and left the room so the rest of the party could interrogate Todrik more effectively.
Scruffin, Amadi, and Ilyon convinced Todrik to talk, and they learned that things had changed since Ilthane first came to town. Durgha had been infested by the worms and had changed, but had not become a wurmspawn, and had taken control up at the manor. Corrupt Sheriff Cubbin, who had taken over after Par-Chieftan Lanod Neff had died in Ilthane’s attack, had been killed by Durgha, and Balabar Smenk had not been seen for a week. Durgha had also seemed to be talking to someone or something upstairs. He did not know what had happened to Ilyon’s mother or the other townspeople who had gone to the manor. Todrik claimed that both he and Merrovin Bask, the wizard who worked for Durgha, were now being forced to help Durgha against their wills under pain of death. Merrovin had been “working” on the hostages which had been taken, attempting to turn them in some way, and the wurmspawn the party had seen so far were considered failures. Scruffin then dimension door’ed Todrik to one of the bridges out of town. Kraldar wasn’t happy, but reasoned that the Defender would mete justice to Todrik before too long. Fearing the difficulty of the task ahead of them, and still exhausted from their travails in Icosiel’s tomb, the party headed back to the Observatory to recuperate before their assault on the manor, although Ilyon was too distraught over his mother’s situation to sleep and thus wasn’t in any condition to assist the search.
In the morning, the party advanced on the manor. Scruffin, using her invisibility, flew around to scout the manor. Not much was discovered other than Neff’s exotic animal cages. Taking Todrik’s suggestion, the party advanced through the greenhouse. As the party scouted the first floor, they fought against two wurmspawn and Merrovin. Scruffin used her magic to suffocate Merrovin, dispatching him quickly. Thinking defeating Durgha, who was likely to be upstairs, would best be done quickly, the party moved upstairs, led by Amadi, who was immediately attacked by Durgha.
Durgha had definitely changed. His skin was a corpsely shade of white, and the backs of his hands and his neck had blue scales. His eyes had turned the sickly green color of the wurms, which crawled all over him and through the chinks in his armor. As he attacked the party in a rage with his greataxe, he shouted out in Infernal that the opponents of Dragotha would be destroyed. Amadi took him on face to face, trading some heavy blows, while Scruffin and Kraldar used fireballs and a flame strike to burn away the wurms and defeat the now undead Durgha, depending on Scruffin’s shield against fire to protect them from the blasts. But the three fire blasts were too much for the manor, and the floor under Durgha collapsed, the walls caught on fire, and the horrible scream of a man burning to death was heard from the other side of a wall.
While Kraldar used Create Water to douse the flames, Amadi and Scruffin investigated the scream, finding Smenk, who had been locked in a closet for at least several days and perished in the flames. Investigating the rest of the second floor, they found an altar, presumably to Dragotha, which it seemed Durgha had been making sacrifices at. Investigating the rest of the first floor, they found no more wurmspawn, but they did find Venelle Averin and another of the rangers in Merrovin’s horrific surgical room. Kraldar revived them, and after finishing exploring the manor, they all returned to town.
In town, they found a large group of miners, bolstered by the return of their heroes to rid the undead from the town, Advising them to avoid the wurms at any cost, the party sent the miners to sweep through the streets, destroying any wurmspawn they discover. The party assisted Hamaneezer with a few difficult wurmspawn, and then headed back to the Observatory to reunite Venelle and Ilyon.
