Kraldar’s Journal, Entry #253
After we had defeated the guardians of the tomb, we went to find Amadi, who had fled in fear and jumped off the top of the blood waterfall. Scruffin flew down first to check on him, while I observed through the magic monocle. After dragging himself to the shore of the blood pool, Amadi and Scruffin were confronted by two wind dukes, who had given us so much trouble when we first came to the Whispering Cairn the first time. Upon seeing this, I trusted in the Defender and what He had shown me in my dreams, and jumped off the top of the waterfall. unfortunately, I was not blown back by a strong wind but rather was battered against the rocks as I fell. Ilyon took the cautious route and used feather fall to ease his journey.
After I splashed unceremoniously into the pool, putting to lie my literal interpretation of my vision from the Defender, Scruffin launched me into the battle with her magic. We made fairly quick work of the wind dukes – we have grown in strength considerably since our first time in the Whispering Cairn.
After the battle, we healed up, and Scruffin began her search of the area on the strength of her powers. First she searched the pool of blood at the bottom of the waterfall, finding only a file as well as the corpse of one of the rock creatures we had previously defeated. Then, using her flying ability, she began to search down the waterfall while I watched through the magic monocle. The waterfall extended deep into the earth, with many alcoves and streams of blood adding to the waterfall. The bottom of the waterfall was in a cavern with a mysterious crystalline roof. A pale green light emanated from around the corner at the far end of the cavern; seeing this through the monocle, I remembered Flycatcher, the shadow spider, had mentioned that Moreto, who had stolen an important item from him, used a lantern which emitted a pale green light. Scruffin used a dimension door to teleport the rest of the party to the cavern, as Moreto rounded the corner into the cavern.
Moreto was a tall, pale figure, carrying his lantern and flanked by two hideous mohrgs – foul, undead creatures with horrific intestinal suckers coming out of their skeletal maws. However, he did not seem aggressive, and instead we had a stand-offish conversation about his exploration of the cavern. We eventually followed him to his campfire around the corner, and learned that he claimed to be a Whiteling! He looked nothing like those foul creatures; he claimed that he was a descendant of their magi, who had retained the form of their ancestors from before their migration to the depths. He had been called upon by his elders to travel to the surface after his society’s long isolation, and had come up the blood waterfall and into the tomb above, where he had battled with Flycatcher, in the process losing 4 of his mohrg companions and indeed stealing an item from Flycatcher. Against my better judgement, we agreed to help him against Flycatcher, although I was sure to specify we would only assist him against Flycatcher, and our agreement ended at that point. In return, we would receive the disk he had stolen from Flycatcher, which he showed us and which was indeed the runic disk from my recurring dream!
Scruffin teleported us back up to the room with the bridge adjacent to Flycatcher’s room, and we planned our attack as Moreto and the mohrgs took the long route levitating up the waterfall. Once Moreto joined us, we made it appear he was bound and I led the way into Flycatcher’s lair. Flycatcher was skeptical that we hadn’t killed Moreto, so Moreto attacked.
In response Flycatcher spewed some foul slippery substance throughout the room, causing great difficulty in movement. But with strong blows from Amadi, who was able to stay upright, and ranged magical attacks from the rest of us, Flycatcher was defeated before too long. Amadi was paralyzed, but recovered in short order.
After we made it to the non- slippery areas of the room Moreto gave us the disk and immediately began to advance further up in the tomb. As our pact with him was at an end, and as agreed among the party, we turned on him and I called down the justice of the Defender on the mohrgs. Moreto began to flee immediately, putting on a great burst of speed, while Amadi destroyed one of the mohrgs with a massive blow. I attempted to stop Moreto with a blade barrier, but he had rounded the corner and I do not know if I stopped him. Regardless, Scruffin used her magic to teleport us to the room he was headed towards, and our battle resumed…
I pray to the Defender to forgive me my trickery – acting as double agents against Flycatcher, tricking him with the chains on Moreto’s wrists, and turning on Moreto as soon as our agreement was at an end – as they were entered into in order to bring justice to evil.
